Barn stars were originally meant to represent the mark of the builder, but
became more frequently used for aesthetic purposes and were added to the
building after construction was complete. Barn stars were used in the
United States during the 1700s and as late as 1870 in Pennsylvania, where
their popularity increased greatly following the Civil War. Initially, they
were common among religious immigrants. At that time, they were more
typically painted on and included floral designs, birds and stars and were
generally referred to as hex signs.
Barn stars remain a very popular form of decoration and modern houses
are sometimes decorated with simple, metal, five-pointed stars. They are
often deliberately distressed or rusted, alluding to the traditional
decoration. Having no structural purpose, they are mainly used for their
general aesthetic appeal and are even considered lucky, akin to a
horseshoe mounted over a doorway.
Here is a generally accepted overview of what the various colors mean
pertaining to Amish and/or Pennsylvania Dutch painted barn symbols, barn
stars included.
